In a recent article for the Bucks County Women’s Journal, Skin Smart dermatology specialist Jennifer Filip, PA-C, discusses the effects of psoriasis on patients, particularly women.
As Filip, a board-certified physician’s assistant who specializes in dermatology, quotes: The National Psoriasis Foundation defines psoriasis as “an immune mediated disease that causes raised, red, scaly patches to appear on the skin.” Psoriasis is distinctive in the fact that it’s a lifelong, hereditary disease. Estimates put the percentage of the U.S. population affected by the disease at 3%, or roughly 6 million.
As the article describes, psoriasis is a unique struggle for women, potentially affecting their clothing choices, relationships and overall self-image. But thankfully, as the article reminds us, the patient’s quality of life often improves as the psoriasis clears. And today, there are numerous options for treating psoriasis to achieve that clearer, healthier skin. Read the article in its entirety here.
