Mohs
Mohs micrographic surgery, a surgical treatment for skin cancers, is performed in-house by Dr. Samy Badawy, Skin Smart’s dermatologic surgeon. Mohs is a very precise, highly detailed technique where small layers of skin are sequentially removed and immediately examined under the microscope until the samples indicate that the skin cancer is completely removed.
Dr. Badawy’s focus is managing the care of patients with skin cancers. Understanding that patients are very anxious about skin cancer on the face, Dr. Badawy has a talent for making his patients feel safe and at ease, while also removing the malignant tissue.
As Mohs surgery allows 100% of the margins to be examined microscopically, it has the highest possible cure rates (up to 99%) for skin cancers, compared to other forms of surgery, radiation, and other non-surgical treatments.
Mohs surgery specifically targets the tissue that is involved with skin cancer while saving as much healthy tissue as possible. This results in smaller scars and superior cosmetic results.
In standard skin cancer surgery, the results are often not available until days after the wound has been repaired, which results in some patients needing to have a further operation if all of the skin cancer was not removed. With Mohs surgery the skin cancer is completely removed before the wound is repaired, avoiding the need for repeat surgery.
In addition, Mohs surgery is performed using local anesthesia, so it is a safer option for individuals with multiple medical problems or on numerous oral medications.
Because of the higher cure rates and subsequent lower number of skin cancers requiring re-treatment in the future, Mohs surgery is a cost-effective option compared to other skin cancer treatments. Combining the use of Mohs Micrographic surgery with expert reconstructions, Dr. Badawy achieves exceptional results for his patients.

Excision refers to a procedure in which potentially cancerous skin lesions are excised. Excisional skin procedures removes atypical moles, cysts and lipomas (soft fleshy nodules).
