You probably think the only place you can take care of your skin is in front of the bathroom mirror. That’s where you wash your face, apply moisturizer, and otherwise keep your skin looking good.
But did you know you can also care for your skin in the kitchen? In honor of National Nutrition Month, Skin Smart is here to share some of our favorite foods for maintaining a healthy glow:
- Dark Chocolate: Besides being delicious, dark chocolate is also great for skin. Dark chocolate contains antioxidants, which hydrate, improve circulation, and can reduce skin roughness. Not that you needed an excuse to eat chocolate.
- Tomatoes: If any food supports your sunscreen, it’s tomatoes. Tomatoes contain an antioxidant called lycopene, which naturally improves your skin’s SPF. Even better: the antioxidant levels increase in cooked and processed tomatoes, so bring on the red sauce and ketchup! Of course, no matter how much Caprese salad you eat, we still strongly recommend you apply sunscreen as part of your daily skincare routine.
- Coffee: Your morning cup of joe does a lot for you. Besides waking you up, it could be helping prevent skin diseases. According to a 2007 study, daily coffee drinkers had an 11% lower prevalence of non-melanoma skin cancer compared to those who don’t drink coffee. Seems like a good reason to keep up your Starbucks habit.
- Kale: Kale may be the superhero of vegetables. A single cup provides 134% and 133% of your recommended daily Vitamin C and Vitamin A, both of which are crucial for firm skin. Additionally, it contains nutrients that help protect your skin from UV rays.
- Bell Peppers: Want the secret to living forever? We can’t help you with that one. But if you want the secret to looking like you’ll live forever, here’s a tip: eat more bell peppers, specifically yellow and green ones. A British study found that people who ate a diet rich in green and yellow bell peppers had fewer wrinkles, particularly crows-feet, than those who didn’t.
